‘End Austerity Now’: Protesters speak out as ‘250k’ decry savage Westminster cuts
Published time: June 21, 2015 18:39

Westminster was gripped by dissent on Saturday, as around a quarter of a million protestors poured onto the streets of London, condemning austerity’s assault on human rights, the economy and the environment.

Branded a “defining moment” by Green Party leader Natalie Bennett, the mass demonstration was attended by students, economists, trade unionists, environmentalists, and social justice activists. Proud pensioners, ethnic minorities, members of the LGBT community, disability rights activists, children and MPs also formed contingents of the rally.

The protest was organized by a diverse coalition of campaigns dubbed The Peoples’ Assembly. Campaigners estimate it was attended by around 250 thousand people.

In the face of rising inequality, some protesters slammed the government’s ramped up military spending. Others lambasted Britain’s housing crisis, poverty-level wages, and slashed social safety nets.

Advocates of austerity, insist high levels of national debt are dampening economic productivity because too much capital is required to service this debt. They argue that reducing the deficit is key to building a productive economy.

This argument was peddled by the Tory-Liberal Dem coalition in 2010, as it entered government. However, critics of austerity insist the coalition’s fiscal conservatism has failed, leaving Britons with an increased deficit.

Treasury chiefs have called upon the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to identify £15 billion ($23.8 billion) worth of welfare cuts – £3 billion ($4.7 billion) more than the Tories proposed during May’s general election race. They recently approached the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Iain Duncan Smith, suggesting child tax credits and working tax credits could be slashed.

‘An ideologically driven attack’

RT spoke to a range of activists who attended Saturday’s demonstration. Campaigners in the protest’s Economists Against Austerity bloc said deep spending cuts are a choice, not a necessity. Downing Street is misleading voters about the need for austerity because the government can borrow capital at historically low rates, the bloc said.

“The effects of austerity cannot be overstated,” Jo Michell a lecturer in economics at the University of the West of England (UWE) told RT. “Britain has experienced the slowest post-crisis recovery on record,” he said.

Michell, who marched with the Economists Against Austerity bloc, said real wages for the average British worker have dropped by roughly 10% since the crash.

“Despite claims that we are all in it together, the burden of austerity has been disproportionately placed on the shoulders of the least well off and the most insecure,” he said.

Michell condemned the demonization of benefits claimants and said the previous government’s “attacks” on disabled Britons were “inexcusable.” “At the same time, tax breaks are given to the well-off and national assets such as the Post Office are sold off at below market value,” he said.

“None of this is necessary. There is no debt crisis,” Michell said. “Austerity is being used as a smokescreen to cover an ideologically-driven attack on the majority of the British public.”

Michell slammed Chancellor George Osborne’s economic foresight.

“There is no long-term economic plan. The Conservative government are committed to a small state and a deregulated market economy. They are opposed to economic planning,” he said.

An alternative economic model for Britain is possible, Michell said. But he insisted it would require a root-and-branch reappraisal of how the state interacts with international markets.

“Recent research has shown that the commonly held view that only the private sector can create wealth and innovate is incorrect. The public and private sectors are reliant upon each other,” he said.

“The way the system is currently configured results in a situation in which costs are socialized – borne by taxpayers – while profits are privatized. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the financial sector, which should be significantly scaled back and brought under closer control and regulation by the state.”

‘Destroying communities’

Ben Pringle, who studies business and economics at Manchester University, also marched with the Economists Against Austerity bloc. He argues Britain’s post-crisis response has been woefully inadequate.

“After the financial crisis, there was an opportunity to reform the banking sector and to improve regulation. Instead of this, we have seen the government target the poor and vulnerable of Britain,” he told RT.

“There has been an astronomical rise in the use of food banks in the UK, with 913,000 food parcels given out in the last year.”

Pringle, 21, criticized the debt trap many students face and called for increased investment in Britain’s younger generations. He lamented the rise of discrimination following the introduction of austerity measures, and warned that unemployment in northern England is “destroying communities.”

“As a country, we are not creating enough jobs outside of London. We need to invest in Britain as a whole,” he said.

‘Divide and rule politics’

Campaigners marching in the demo’s Anti-racism & Anti-fascism bloc, called for a nationwide, grass roots response to austerity.

Riled by rising homelessness, inequality and the erosion of workers’ rights, the bloc accused the Tories of employing “divide and rule” politics to further their agenda. They demanded the government stop scapegoating immigrants in a bid to justify policies driven by vested interests.

Labour MPs, Green Party MPs, Left Unity representatives, trade unionists and socialists also attended Saturday’s demo.

As tens of thousands of anti-austerity campaigners gathered in London’s financial district, Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn told the BBC that Britain’s policy path must be rebalanced.

“We should not set an artificial objective of running a budget surplus in three to five years. Instead we should set objectives about reducing inequality and expanding the economy,” he said.

Corbyn, who is running in Labour’s leadership race, argued such an approach could offer a win-win solution: serving the common good, while increasing tax incomes.

The Conservative Party says an increase in welfare cuts from £12 billion ($19 billion) to £15 billion ($23.8 billion) would allow other sectors of government spending to be ring-fenced. However, critics argue further squeezing of welfare spending would impact most severely on Britain’s working poor.

Caroline Lucas, a Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion, said austerity is an “ideological attack on the poor.” She stressed 76 percent of the electorate did not vote for the Conservative Party.

“Osborne has no mandate for austerity. He wants to shrink the state not cut the deficit,” she said.

Lucas argued revenue could be raised in other ways such as financial transaction taxes, the scrapping of Trident and clamping down on tax dodging.

Green Party leader Natalie Bennett said austerity has forced Britain’s less privileged to pay for corrupt bankers’ greed. Addressing the crowds gathered in central London, she noted the International Monetary Fund (IMF) previously slammed Osborne’s austerity agenda.

“This is utterly the wrong direction for Britain,” she said.

‘Austerity hurts people – and the planet’

Environmental campaigners attending the demo demanded the Tories increase spending on green infrastructure, and stop cutting environment, energy and climate expenditure. They said Britain should be transitioning to a carbon-free, resource based economy, but instead is hurtling towards Victorian levels of inequality and environmental degradation.

Speaking ahead of the demo, Friends of the Earth’s David Powell said austerity “hurts people and the planet.” He added that the Conservative’s policy is breeding inequality and environmental injustice.

Powell warned air pollution kills almost 30,000 people each year in the UK, hitting impoverished and marginalized communities hard. He also stressed cold weather kills 25,000 annually – a third of which die as a result of living in poorly insulated homes.

Powell called for investment in home insulation, sustainable forms of transport, and renewable energy.

‘Assault on human rights’

Disability rights campaigners in Britain have repeatedly warned spending cuts implemented since 2010 have dismantled the welfare state and impacted severely on vulnerable members of society. Social justice campaign, Disabled People Against Cuts’ (DPAC), denounced the welfare reforms implemented under the previous government.

DPAC’s Anita Bellows told RT benefits caps and benefits sanctions have been detrimental for Britain’s most vulnerable. The DPAC campaigner, who suffers from a disability, noted a Supreme Court ruling in March found the state’s benefits cap is legal – even in cases where it violates international law.

Supreme Court judges criticized the cap for breaching the United Nation’s (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child at the time. But the Court failed to overturn the policy, saying the issue must be dealt with by Westminster.

Currently standing at £26,000 ($41,000), the benefits cap will soon plummet to £23,000 ($36,500). This sum covers housing benefit along with benefits for children.

Bellows argued benefits sanctions on single parent families also culminate in the violation of children’s rights.

The government insists sanctioned claimants, who fail to meet government requirements, are entitled to hardship payments. But Bellows argues the state’s failure to inform sanctioned claimants of this hardship fund creates human suffering.

The government vowed to publish figures detailing these hardship allowances in May 2015, during a public inquiry into state welfare reforms. The stats are yet to materialize.

Earlier this month, more than 58,000 people signed a petition demanding the release of figures detailing the number of disabled people to die within six weeks of having their benefits cut. The government has sought to block their publication.

“One way to ensure less inequality is to have a human rights approach to welfare and to ensure that claimants are getting a level of benefits which ensures a decent life,” Bellows said.

Observers predict a continuation of pro-establishment policies that bolster the interests of banks, big business and the elite. Nevertheless, campaigners continue to forge a grassroots response to austerity.

Dangerous Propaganda!

One of the “signs” predicted for “the last days” was that “evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived”. Below are two recent accounts of how this is proving true today.

The question that must be asked is “WHO are these ‘evil men’? WHERE are they?”. The answer (for anyone who frequents this site that is) is painfully obvious! HINT: “The LOVE of MONEY is the ROOT of all evil”!

The Bible provides a very descriptive account of the demise (destruction) of the epitome of selfish greed and materialism that has corrupted the world, “Babylon, the Great Whore”, in the Book of Revelation.

If you might wonder “who” or rather “where” this is, just look at where most of the richest elites come from, their international banks and trade are based, where the “military industrial complex” works from in trying to exert it’s “might” and will over the rest of the world! Read the account in The Book of Revelation for yourself and see who’s foot the shoe fits!

By the way, there are many, many examples in The Bible where God placed His Prophets close to the top leadership of “His People’s enemies”, even protecting them safely in those countries as trusted counselors and advisers, while He predicted coming judgment and destruction of “His Own people” for getting away from Him and becoming a dandy bad example to the rest of the world!

“The enemy” was not necessarily more Godly, however God seemed to think that they were more RIGHTEOUS, or at least served as a good tool of chastisement if nothing else. Reason? — There is almost NOTHING God HATES MORE than SELF-righteousness, at which the hypocritical West are MOST proficient!

Watch the following and “see if these things be so” for yourself.

In closing, please switch over to here to “watch and learn” about the financial aspects of it all from dear Max Keiser…

Just a reminder or two…

First, try to keep up with Max Keiser’s exposures and explanations of the banks and the corporations regularly in his Keiser Reports (“finance 101 for dummies”). The wheeling, dealing and stealing that takes place, on a global scale, should cure anyone of believing that they live in a “free” or “democratic” world. “Survival” is not just a word to be used for “the poor” of “the third world” or “conflict zones” now. The “first” world’s (how come you never hear of a “second” world?) general population just haven’t cottoned-on to the fact that their “security” is false and likely to disappear at any moment, when “the powers that be” decide it is the most opportune time to pull the rug out from underneath us all! If you really want to know what is happening and why, anywhere and at any time, “follow the money”!

(Note: An example – the current “Chancellor of the Exchequer” (finance minister) of the UK was invited to attend the Bilderberger meetings previously and recently. During the previous coalition government he managed to double the national debt! Now, “austerity measures” are foisted on the UK’s population, while we are told that the economy is “in recovery”!)

Second, where so-called mainstream “news” media is concerned, bear in mind that it is only for the purpose of misleading and distracting (basically lies) while instilling fear and formulating “public opinion”, which is so that the “sheeple” can be led (to the slaughter that is)! “Political” BS is especially misleading and should be avoided at all costs! Politics is a very dirty game, as has been proven by almost every “leader” of any “power” of the last centuries, and their perfidy only gets worse as they are emboldened through “elections” (not). Politicians do not “serve the people”. They serve their paymasters, and for what they can get for themselves! The banksters and their puppets should be charged and tried for treason against their formerly sovereign (no more) “nation states” (which exist in name only now), with the populations holding them to account for crimes far worse, and on a much larger scale, than an ordinary citizen would ever be allowed to get away with! “Double standards” is a gross understatement!

A case in point… Not only have none of the “coalition of the willing” ever been brought to trial for crimes against humanity, but one of their number, the former UK PM, has been running amok in the Mid-East since he was voted out of office, amassing personal millions as a “peace envoy”, and now, since losing that job, he has just become “special advisor” to the President of the Ukraine debacle! Could anything be more obvious???

Meanwhile, the “leaders” of the West are losing more and more credibility with the rest of the world, while they ramp up their self-righteous, hypocritical war rhetoric! Whew!

“I can’t do the subject justice!”

Numbers! (Updated 12th)

They just finished the “G7” meeting (whatever THAT means)!??? (See comment in the second half of the “In The Now” video below!)

Now they are about to hold this year’s “Bilderberg” meeting!!!? (Scroll down and watch the second half of the “In The Now” program – VERY important info!)

Take a look at the charts showing the numbers in this BBC article – where the people come from, what areas of “society” are represented, and “who” is invited! Shocking! Especially if it’s supposed to be “an informal gathering” for “discussing global concerns and ideas”. (If so, why so secret, by invitation only, behind closed doors, and attendees forbidden to disclose what was discussed???)

Anyway, seeing as “Finance” has the largest contingent attending, perhaps this is why the policies and their operation as explained by Max in the following makes sense!?

(You will notice that the finance company “PriceWaterhouseCooper” (it’s spelled that way on their logo) is mentioned in the video above. Interesting that this same finance company was responsible for monitoring and adjudicating the voting process in the Eurovision Song Contest a few weeks back??? Hmmmmm! “Follow the money!” It’s ALWAYS about the money!)

Also read this op-ed, especially the section on the current (secret) “Trade Agreements”. These will have a DIRECT impact on the global population, whether we like it or not! Money MORE than “talks”, it’s how the world is RULED! Read it!

American dreaming, from G1 to Bilderberg

Pepe Escobar is the roving correspondent for Asia Times/Hong Kong, an analyst for RT and TomDispatch, and a frequent contributor to websites and radio shows ranging from the US to East Asia.

Published time: June 11, 2015 11:31

What’s the connection between the G7 summit in Germany, President Putin’s visit to Italy, the Bilderberg club meeting in Austria, and the TTIP – the US-EU free trade deal – negotiations in Washington?

We start at the G7 in the Bavarian Alps – rather G1 with an added bunch of “junior partners” – as US President Barack Obama gloated about his neo-con induced feat; regiment the EU to soon extend sanctions on Russia even as the austerity-ravaged EU is arguably hurting even more than Russia.

Predictably, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande caved in – even after being forced by realpolitik to talk to Russia and jointly carve the Minsk-2 agreement.

The hypocrisy-meter in the Bavarian Alps had already exploded with a bang right at the pre-dinner speech by EU Council President Donald Tusk, former Prime Minister of Poland and certified Russophobe/warmonger: “All of us would have preferred to have Russia round the G7 table. But our group is not only a group (that shares) political or economic interests, but first of all this is a community of values. And that is why Russia is not among us.”

So this was all about civilized “values” against “Russian aggression.”

The “civilized” G1 + junior partners could not possibly argue whether they would collectively risk a nuclear war on European soil over a Kiev-installed ‘Banderastan’, sorry, “Russian aggression.”

Instead, the real fun was happening behind the scenes. Washington factions were blaming Germany for making the West lose Russia to China, while adult minds in the EU – away from the Bavarian Alps – blamed Washington.

Even juicier is a contrarian view circulating among powerful Masters of the Universe in the US corporate world, not politics. They fear that in the next two to three years France will eventually re-ally with Russia (plenty of historical precedents). And they – once again – identify Germany as the key problem, as in Berlin forcing Washington to get involved in a Prussian ‘Mitteleuropa’ Americans fought two wars to prevent.

As for the Russians – from President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov downwards – a consensus has emerged; it’s pointless to discuss anything substantial considering the pitiful intellectual pedigree – or downright neo-con stupidity – of the self-described “Don’t Do Stupid Stuff” Obama administration policy makers and advisers. As for the “junior partners” – mostly EU minions – they are irrelevant, mere Washington vassals.

It would be wishful thinking to expect the civilized “values” gang to propose alternatives for the overwhelming majority of citizens of G7 nations getting anything other than Mac-jobs, or barely surviving as hostages of finance-junkie turbo-capitalism which only benefits the one percent.Rather easier to designate the proverbial scapegoat – Russia – and proceed with NATO-infused fear/warmongering rhetoric.

Iron Lady Merkel also found time to pontificate on climate change – instilling all and sundry to invest in a “low-carbon global economy.” Few noticed that the alleged deadline for full “decarbonization” was set for the end of the 21st century, when this planet will be in deep, deep trouble.

Achtung! Bilderberg!

Obama’s neocon-induced newspeak continues to rule that Russia dreams of recreating the Soviet empire. Now compare it to what President Putin is telling Europe.

Last week, Putin found time to give an interview to the Milan-based Corriere della Sera at 2 am; the interview was published as the Bavarian Alps show went on, and ahead of Putin’s June 10 visit to Italy. Russia’s geopolitical interests and US- Russia relations are depicted in excruciating detail.

So Putin was a persona non grata at the G1 plus junior partners? Well, in Italy he visited the Milan Expo; met Prime Minister Renzi and Pope Francis; reminded everyone about the “privileged economic and political ties” between Italy and Russia; and stressed the 400 Italian companies active in Russia and the million Russian tourists who visit Italy every year.

Crucially, he also evoked that consensus; Russia had represented an alternative view as a member of the G8, but now “other powers” felt they no longer needed it. The bottom line: it’s impossible to have an adult conversation with Obama and friends.

And right on cue, from Berlin –where he was displaying his sterling foreign policy credentials, Jeb Bush, brother of destroyer of Iraq Dubya Bush, fully scripted by his neocon advisers, declared Putin a bully and rallied Europe to fight, what else, “Russian aggression.”

US attempt to ‘lecture the Pope’ before Putin meeting a ‘big responsibility’ to take – Kremlin

The rhetorical haze over what was really discussed in the Bavarian Alps only began to dissipate at the first chords of the real sound of music; the Bilderberg Group meeting starting this Thursday at the Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol in Austria, only three days after the G1 plus junior partners.

Possible conspiracies aside, Bilderberg may be defined as an ultra-select bunch of elite lobbyists – politicians, US corporate honchos, EU officials, captains of industry, heads of intelligence agencies, European royals – organized annually in a sort of informal think tank/policy-forming format, to advance globalization and all crucial matters related to the overall Atlanticist agenda. Call it the prime Atlanticist Masters of the Universe talkfest.

To make things clear – not that they are big fans of transparency – the composition of the steering committee is here. And this is what they will be discussing in Austria.

Naturally they will be talking about “Russian aggression” (as in who cares about failed Ukraine; what we need is to prevent Russia from doing business with Europe).

Naturally they will be talking about Syria (as in the partition of the country, with the Caliphate already a fact of post-Sykes-Picot life).

Naturally they will be talking about Iran (as in let’s do business, buy their energy and bribe them into joining our club).

But the real deal is really the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) – the alleged “free trade” deal between the US and the EU. Virtually all major business/finance lobbyists for the TTIP will be under the same Austrian roof.

And not by accident Bilderberg starts one day before “fast track” presidential authority is to be debated at the US Congress.

WikiLeaks and a ton of BRICS

Enter WikiLeaks, with what in a fairer world would be a crucial spanner in the works.

The fast track authority would extend US presidential powers for no less than six years; that includes the next White House tenant, which might well be ‘The Hillarator’ or Jeb “Putin is a bully” Bush.

This presidential authority to negotiate dodgy deals includes not only the TTIP but also the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA).

WikiLeaks, just in time, published the Healthcare Annex to the secret draft “Transparency” chapter of the TPP, along with each country’s negotiating position. No wonder this draft is secret. And there’s nothing “transparent” about it; it’s an undisguised hold-up of national healthcare authorities by Big Pharma.

The bottom line is that these three mega-deals – TTP, TTIP and TiSA – are the ultimate template of what could be politely described as global corporate governance, a Bilderberg wet dream. The losers: nation-states, and the very concept of Western democracy. The winners: mega-corporations.

Julian Assange, in a statement, succinctly nailed it “It is a mistake to think of the TPP as a single treaty. In reality there are three conjoined mega-agreements, the TiSA, the TPP and the TTIP, all of which strategically assemble into a grand unified treaty, partitioning the world into the West versus the rest. This ‘Great Treaty’ is described by the Pentagon as the economic core to the US military’s ‘Asia Pivot.’ The architects are aiming no lower than the arc of history. The Great Treaty is taking shape in complete secrecy, because along with its undebated geostrategic ambitions it locks into place an aggressive new form of transnational corporatism for which there is little public support.”

So this is the real Atlanticist agenda – the final touches being applied in the arc spanning the G1 + added junior partners to Bilderberg (expect a lot of crucial phone calls from Austria to Washington this Friday). NATO on trade. Pivoting to Asia excluding Russia and China. The West vs. the rest.

Now for the counterpunch. As the show in the Bavarian Alps unrolled, the first BRICS Parliamentarian Forum was taking place in Moscow – ahead of the BRICS summit in Ufa next month.

Neocons – with Obama in tow – knock themselves out dreaming that Russia has become “isolated” from the rest of the world because of their sanctions. Since then Moscow has signed major economic/strategic contracts with at least twenty nations. Next month, Russia will host the BRICS summit – 45 percent of the world’s population, a GDP equivalent to the EU, and soon bigger than the current G7 – as well as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, when India and Pakistan, currently observers, will be accepted as full members.

G1 plus junior partners? Bilderberg? Get a job; you’re not the only show in town, any town.

(The statements, views and opinions expressed in this column are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of RT.)

Closing, from me:

For those in the UK – “freedom” is all but vanished/vanquished under the new “security/surveillance” legislation, and not only have the promised “austerity measures” been implemented since the election, but new legislation aims to ensure that the policies are CONTINUED by successive governments (whether they or we like it or not)!!!

You should be aware…(Updated)

…of the following, IF you value your personal privacy, safety, security and freedom!

And for those who might wonder “who” benefits from “austerity” (and subsequently who DOESN’T) take a look (below) at the segment about Greece possibly defaulting on its “national debt”! Actually, the term “national debt” is a misleading misnomer. It should more accurately be called “government debt”, as they are the ones who have to pay the pipers they borrowed from (without the public’s knowledge or consent)! Basically they are there to protect the interests of the banks and corporations, NOT “the people” they are paid (by the taxes they collect from the people) to SERVE, NOT rule over!

Recently in the media it was reported that the UK government was “given a mandate by the people” to invoke the new waves of more “austerity”. HOW is this possible when they received ONLY 24% of the vote (where only 66% of the electorate bothered at all), and the MAJORITY of the public voted for CHANGE, and not least of all want a change in the electoral process!?

Anyway, take note of how Argentina and Russia both BENEFITED from defaulting and not going the way of “austerity” (We are being LIED TO folks)!
